What is peritoneal cancer?
Peritoneal cancer is a rare type of cancer that develops in a layer of epithelial cells that is a thin layer covering the inner wall of the stomach. These linings are called ‘peritoneum’ and hence, this cancer is named as ‘peritoneal cancer’. This lining protects the abdominal organs such as small and large intestine, bladder, uterus and rectum. The peritoneum lining releases a lubricating fluid, which helps in the movement of organs inside the abdomen. The survival rate of this cancer is very poor because the symptoms are often ignored and are only detected when the condition becomes severe and the patient is in the late stages of peritoneal cancer.
Symptoms of peritoneal cancer

Risk factors for peritoneal cancer

Age: It is more likely in middle-aged and older people.
Genetics: If you have a history of peritoneal or ovarian cancer in your family, you may also be susceptible to it. It is better that you get yourself checked from time to time.
Length and weight: Obese and tall people are at highest risk of peritoneal cancer.
Hormone therapy: In menopause, women undergoing hormone therapy may also have this cancer.
